WHALE RIDER (dir. Niki Caro, 2002, 105 min.) is a New Zealand film about confronting tradition and entrenched prejudice in order to courageously secure one’s place in the world. Twelve-year-old Paikea Apirana (Keisha Castle-Hughes) seeks to become chief of her Maori tribe, but as a female, she is blocked from ascending to the role of leader. Pai is a challenge to the expectations of family and community members alike, and when she succeeds where village boys fail—in the traditional task of recovering a whale tooth cast into the ocean—her worthiness as a leader clashes with those who would defend the old and gendered order. The film’s awards include the 2003 Sundance World Cinema Audience Award.
