FYS Teaching Excellence Series

Come learn and professionalize with one another around key topics related to FYS instruction, such as navigating challenging conversations, setting up effective peer review, and leaving accessible, high-impact comments on student writing. Lunch will be served at 12pm, and the program will begin at 12:15pm. All FYS instructors are welcome!

• Effective Discussions in FYS: FYS is a discussion-based seminar for which one of the outcomes is to "identify and consider one’s assumptions, thereby building informed perspectives." This can involve challenging, tense, halting, and even quiet discussions, among other things. This session will focus on strategies for setting up effective discussion in FYS and explore possibilities for getting unstuck or redirecting students in the moment. • Accessible Comments on Student Writing: How can we provide feedback on writing that is both enabling and empowering to student writers? This session will explore scenarios and brainstorm strategies for helping students find what they need, understand what they find, and use what they understand appropriately when it comes to feedback on their writing. • Setting Up Peer Review: Peer review encourages students to engage with each other’s work and ideas and gives them more agency over the feedback that they choose to implement into their revisions. Effective peer review requires some planning and preparation in order to effectively encourage openness, constructive critique, and collaboration within student groups. In this session, we'll discuss some models for setting up peer review for final projects in FYS and save time for you to visualize how it might fit into your plan for the final weeks of the semester.
