On August 19, 1792, the Marquis de Lafayette was captured as a traitor by the Habsburg-Austrian army in Belgium. A treacherous journey from prison to prison in Prussia followed until his final incarceration at the Fortress of Olmütz in Habsburg-Austria’s north-eastern province of Moravia (today Olomouc, Czech Republic) from 1794 until 1797. He was known as “State prisoner #2” and experienced harsh conditions, including being denied letters and possessions. Eventually, his wife Adrienne and his daughters, Anastasie and Virginie, were able to join him and shared his two prison cells from October 1795 until September 19, 1797, when Napoleon Bonaparte secured their release.

Prof. Lamb-Faffelberger’s presentation will focus on the harrowing story of the Marquis’s five years of incarceration and share her experience and images from her recent visit to the site of Marquis de Lafayette’s prison in Olomouc.
