With the shuttering of USAID, the largest global source of international aid funds and a focal point of the the global humanitarian aid system, millions of people around the world are asking, "What now?" Will other governments step up and fill the void? Will private donors? Should they? What does this mean for the lives of millions, for global politics, for soft power? The Class of '61 International Speakers Series is excited to host Dr. Steven Radelet, the Donald F. McHenry Chair in Global Human Development and Distinguished Professor of the Practice at Georgetown University, and Samantha Custer, of University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy and Center for International and Security Studies to discuss these pressing questions. A former Chief Economist at USAID, Dr. Radelet has extensive experience advising national leaders, including past Class of '61 speaker Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, on development issues. Ms. Custer has over a decade of experience at AidData, a research lab at William & Mary, and one of the foremost international aid data collection and analysis organizations in the world, where she served as the Director of Policy Analysis. They will be joined by a panel of faculty and student discussants. Attendees will gain clear insights into the practical details and the big picture of international aid and come away with a better understanding of the stakes involved in the loss of USAID.
