Kryptos is the name of a sculpture designed by artist Jim Sanborn which was installed on the grounds of CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.  This piece of artwork is famous for the encrypted message cut into the copper plates that form the sculpture.  To date, three pieces of the message have been decoded, while the fourth piece remains as one of the most famous unsolved codes in the world.  This talk will cover some of the basics of cryptanalysis, including the techniques that were used to crack the first pieces of the Kryptos cipher.  It will also serve as the kickoff to the annual Cryptography Competition; for more info on the contest, please contact Prof. Liebner:  liebnerj@lafayette.edu
