Joel Alfonso Vargas’ first feature film—Mad Bills to Pay (or Destiny, dile que no soy malo)—won the NEXT Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The film’s NYC premiere was at MOMA’s New Directors/New Films 2025 series on April 4, 2025. A native of the Bronx and a 2014 FAMS alum, Joel is featured in Filmmaker magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film.
