Peer evaluation is one element of a comprehensive, thoughtful approach to enhancing teaching quality and evaluating faculty work. Yet traditional approaches to peer evaluation are criticized for various reasons, among them the potential of bias, the stress that faculty members can sometimes feel, and the possibility of fostering only superficial understanding of a colleague’s work. In this talk, we will explore various ways to create peer evaluation processes that can mitigate bias, foster new ideas, and deepen the quality and enjoyment of collegial discussion around teaching issues.
