Please join the Physics Department in welcoming Dr. Tristan Smith from Swarthmore College, who will be giving a talk for our Physics colloquium series.

The talk will be preceded by a Physics Tea from 4:00PM to 4:30PM in the Hugel lobby.

A description of the talk is as follows:

Our understanding of the dynamics of the universe has undergone a profound shift in the past twenty years: we have incontrovertible evidence that the universe is held together by an unknown substance we call dark matter and is being accelerated apart by an unknown substance we call dark energy. These mysterious substances are ‘dark’ because they emit no light and we only know of their existence through their gravitational effects. I will talk about some of my recent work developing new analysis techniques to try to learn as much as we can about the ‘dark universe’.
