AMÉLIE (dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001, 123 min.) is a fantasia of a romantic comedy, a “delicious pastry of a movie,” in the words of film critic Roger Ebert. Audrey Tautou is a humble but imaginative Parisian waitress who devotes herself to inventively bringing happiness into the lives of others. Energetically and stylistically explosive, AMÉLIE brims with sweetness and light. “It is so hard to make a nimble, charming comedy. So hard to get the tone right and find actors who embody charm instead of impersonating it. It takes so much confidence to dance on the tightrope of whimsy. AMÉLIE takes those chances, and gets away with them” (Ebert).
