Laura Auricchio will discuss her new book The Marquis: Lafayette Reconsidered, just published by Alfred A. Knopf on October 14, 2014. This "sharp and moving biography" (Kirkus, starred review) of the Marquis de Lafayette, French hero of the American Revolution, looks past the storybook tale of Lafayette and explores how his reputation rose to great heights during the American Revolution only to collapse more than a decade later during the French Revolution. Drawing on extensive archival, print, and visual resources from the period, Auricchio brings Lafayette to life as a man of high ideals doing his best to make his way through uncommonly treacherous times.
