DESCRIPTION:The Demaines like to blur the lines between art and mathematics
 \, by freely \nmoving from designing sculpture to proving theorems and bac
 k again. Paper \nfolding is a great setting for this approach\, as it mixe
 s a rich geometric \nstructure with a beautiful art form. Mathematically\,
  they are continually \ndeveloping algorithms to fold paper into any shape
  you desire.\nSculpturally\, they have been exploring curved creases\, whi
 ch remain poorly \nunderstood mathematically but have potential applicatio
 ns in robotics\, \ndeployable structures\, manufacturing\, and self-assemb
 ly. By integrating \nscience and art\, the Demaines constantly find new in
 spirations\, problems\, and \nideas\, proving that sculptures do or don't 
 exist\, or illustrating \nmathematical beauty through physical beauty. Col
 laboration\, particularly as a \nfather-son team\, has been a powerful way
  for us to bridge these fields. \nLately\, they are exploring how folding 
 changes with other materials\, such as \nhot glass. This will open a new a
 pproach to glassblowing and find fresh ways \nfor paper and glass to inter
 act.\nThe two Demaines—father and son—work closely together and have many 
 joint \nworks of both mathematics and art. Erik Demaine\, a MacArthur Fell
 ow and \nAlfred P. Sloan Research Fellow\, is a member of the Theory of Co
 mputation \nGroup and the Algorithms Group at CSAIL—Computer Science and A
 rtificial \nIntelligence Laboratory—at MIT. An accomplished artist\, his i
 nterests \ninclude origami and glassblowing. Several of his curved origami
  sculptures \nare housed in the permanent collection of the Museum of Mode
 rn Art\, in New \nYork.\nMartin Demaine is the Angelika and Barton Weller 
 Artist in Residence in the \nMIT Department of Electrical Engineering and 
 Computer Science\, a technical \ninstructor in the Department of Materials
  Science and Engineering Glass Lab\, \nand a member of the Theory of Compu
 tation Group at CSAIL. Martin is Erik’s \nfather.
