DESCRIPTION:In this student workshop on Saturday\, November 7th\, we’ll loo
k at the many \nways birds become data\, and we’ll investigate the rich c
reative \npossibilities that sit at the intersection of nature\, code and
art. We’ll \nstart the day off with a bird walk at Merrill Creek where w
e’ll visit some \nof the birds who’ve chosen to overwinter in Easton. In
the afternoon \nwe’ll learn how to access data from eBird and we’ll make
bird data \nportraits using code and physical materials.\n\n\nThis worksh
op will be led by New York City-based artist\, writer and teacher \nJer T
horp. He is best known for designing the algorithm to place the nearly \n
3\,000 names on the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan. Jer was the New York Times
 ’ \nfirst Data Artist in Residence\, is a National Geographic Explorer\,
and in \n2017 and 2018 served as the Innovator in Residence at the Librar
y of \nCongress. Jer is one of the world’s foremost data artists\, and is
a leading \nvoice for the ethical use of big data. This event is co-spon
sored by the \nLafayette College Libraries and the Biology Department. Tr
ansportation to \nMerrill Creek and lunch are provided.\n\nSpace is limit
