DESCRIPTION:This project examines how different dimensions of political ide
 ntity shape  \npeople’s responses to artificial intelligence. In a randomi
 zed experiment  \nwith more than 600 participants\, we ask people to refle
 ct on either their  \neconomic identity\, cultural identity\, or no identi
 ty before evaluating policy  \nresponses to AI-related concerns involving 
 jobs\, inequality\, national  \nsecurity\, and discrimination. Cultural id
 entity reflection widens differences  \nbetween traditional and progressiv
 e participants across several policy  \ndomains\, while economic identity 
 reflection produces much more limited  \neffects. At the same time\, we fi
 nd little evidence that these patterns are  \ndriven by changes in beliefs
  about AI’s consequences. The results suggest  \nthat identity can shape h
 ow people translate a common set of perceived  \nconsequences into policy 
 preferences\, which identity people bring to AI can  \nchange how they tra
 de off its economic and social consequences.\n \n
