 . Ruochen Bo  \n(Bilkent University). Prof. Bo will give a talk entitled\,
  'Short Film\, Slow  \nCinema: Tsai Ming-liang’s Diamond Sutra (2012).' Th
 is talk introduces Tsai  \nMing-liang’s ongoing Walker series and examines
  closely its one and only  \nsingle-take short film\, titled Diamond Sutra
 . The film’s duration is not  \narbitrary. It lasts as long as the real ti
 me of a single mundane material  \nprocess: the cycle of a Tatung rice coo
 ker onscreen. Its narrative  \nminimalism\, further intensified by the exc
 ruciating slowness in Lee  \nKang-sheng’s walking movement\, is juxtaposed
  with an enclosed\, invisible  \nyet audible\, dynamic and irreversible tr
 ansformation: water boils\, rice  \nabsorbs water and changes texture\, st
 eam accumulates and is expelled\,  \nculminating in a final release that T
 sai associates with his mother’s final  \nbreath. In analyzing the heterog
 enous functions of the rice cooker\, I show  \nhow it could serve as a met
 aphor for the short-film form itself. Furthermore\,  \nthe attention to th
 e way slowness is staged in the film could demonstrate how  \nthe film’s a
 pparent minimalism renders emptiness as eventful form\,  \nilluminating th
 e sutra’s paradoxical logic.\n\nRuochen Bo is an Assistant Professor in th
 e Department of Communication and  \nDesign at Bilkent University. She rec
 eived her Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from  \nthe University of Toronto in 202
 4. She previously served as an Assistant  \nProfessor in the Department of
  Film Studies at UNC Wilmington (2024-25) and a  \nHou Family Predoctoral 
 Fellow at Harvard University (2022-23). Her work on  \nfilm and philosophy
  has appeared in Film-Philosophy\, Film Quarterly\,  \nConversations: Jour
 nal of Cavellian Studies\, and elsewhere.
