DESCRIPTION:This talk investigates the evolving literary representations of
  the pipa\, a \nplucked string instrument prominent in medieval China\, in
  writings from the \nTang and Song dynasties. Unlike instruments associate
 d with moral cultivation \nand musical pedagogy\, the pipa remained unboun
 d by such interpretive \ntraditions\, allowing it to be a vehicle for fant
 astical\, morally ambiguous\, \nand emotionally charged representations of
  music. Tang and Song writers thus \nimagined the pipa as a sonic emblem o
 f the “other\,” associating it with \nforeignness\, supernatural and ritua
 l practices\, and alluring femininity.\n\n
