What links the dizzying rise of economic inequality to the climate emergency and the breakdown of democratic governance? Dartmouth Sociology Professor Brooke Harrington points in an overlooked direction: the offshore financial system. By facilitating a global elite insurgency against democracy, international law, and environmental protection, the offshore system has unleashed a polycrisis whose fallout threatens all 8.3 billion of us. Harrington’s research peels back the layers of secrecy that have protected the offshore financial system from scrutiny and allowed the polycrisis to build to its current level. Her new work identifies key vulnerabilities in the system that can be leveraged to slow or halt the crisis.
