DESCRIPTION:Join us for a keynote address of the Bicentennial Academic Symp
 osium given by \nProfessor Landemore:\n\n*Politics Without Politicians: De
 mocratic Renewal in an Age of Polarization \nand AI*\n\nRepresentative dem
 ocracy is buckling under pressures its architects never \nanticipated: ent
 renched polarization\, eroding institutional trust\, and now \nthe arrival
  of AI systems poised to reshape governance itself. This talk \nargues tha
 t the fragilities of our representative democracies are systemic \nand str
 uctural\, not contingent\, and make them unfit to handle the new \nchallen
 ges ahead. Drawing on the case for citizen rule developed in 'Politics \nW
 ithout Politicians [1]' (2026)\, I show how lottery-based assemblies that 
 \ndeliberate and legislate\, paired with large-scale referenda on periodic
  \nprograms and select controversial questions\, offer a principled\, scal
 able \nalternative to rule by professional politicians. I then turn to a m
 ore \nurgent frontier: AI governance\, where decisions with world-wide con
 sequence \nare currently being made by a handful of corporate actors with 
 no democratic \nmandate. Building on recent work proposing a global delibe
 rative architecture \nfor AI oversight\, I argue that the same logic that 
 justifies citizen \nassemblies domestically demands a democratic answer at
  the global level\, \nbefore that architecture is built by default\, by th
 ose with the least \nincentive to include the rest of us.\n\nFree copies o
