DESCRIPTION:/To Bigotry No Sanction/: Washington\, the Jews of Newport\, an
 d the American \nRevolution\n\nZoom presentation\, November 10\, 8 pm.\n\n
The American Jewish community played a significant\, if little-known\, rol
e in \nthe American Revolution.  Perhaps as a consequence\, President Geor
ge \nWashington in 1790 sent a memorable letter to the “Hebrew Congregatio
n” \nin Newport\, promising Jews liberty and equality.  Many are familiar
with the \nkey words in Washington’s letter – “to bigotry no sanction\, to
\npersecution no assistance” – but there is much more to the corresponden
ce \nthan that.  This lecture will provide the context and unlock the deep
er \nsecrets of this correspondence\, highlighting its meaning for Jews an
 d \nAmericans of every faith.
