DESCRIPTION:In February 1826\, Nicolai Lobachevsky delivered a lecture at K
 azan University \n(Russia)\, on a question that enthralled (plagued?) math
 ematics for over two \nmillennia: in planar geometry\, can one prove that 
 given a line and a point \nnot on the line\, there is a unique parallel to
  the line through the given \npoint?  Of Lobachevsky's work on this proble
 m\, mathematician W. K. Clifford \nquipped “...what Copernicus was to Ptol
 emy\, Lobachevsky was to Euclid\,” \nwhile philosopher Hilary Putnam wrote
  “the overthrow of Euclidean geometry \nis the most important event in the
  history of science for the \nepistemologist.”  To pile it on\, Einstein s
 aid “should I not have been \nacquainted with it [non-Euclidean geometry]\
 , I never would have been able to \ndevelop the theory of relativity.”\n\n
 Geometry (predominantly Euclidean) has been present in the Lafayette \ncur
 riculum since its founding.  On March 22\, 1967\, Lafayette College \nMath
 ematics Professor James P. Crawford delivered a Jones Faculty Lecture at 
 \nthe College\, dramatically entitled “Mathematics--Strange Seas of \nThou
 ght\,” taking the audience on a journey through the discovery of \nnon-Euc
 lidean geometry and Godel's incompleteness theorems in logic. \n\nIn this 
 talk we will explore the dramatic nature of the discovery of \nnon-Euclide
 an geometry.  We will discuss what that even means\, and how \nmathematici
 ans put hyperbolic geometry on equal footing logically with the \nstill ve
 nerable Euclidean geometry of antiquity.  Doing this involves \ngeometers 
 building representations of hyperbolic geometry using notions from \nEucli
 dean geometry\, analogous to cartographers building maps of the Earth.  \n
  \n\nYou should walk away from the talk better prepared to appreciate the 
 meaning \nof the geometry build that will happen outside Pardee this week!
