DESCRIPTION:Professor Walker will talk about her book /Beyond the Shores /
[1]and her \nresearch on histories of Black mobility.\n\n \n\nPart histor
 ical exploration\, part travel memoir\, /Beyond the Shores/ reveals \npoig
nant histories of a diverse group of African Americans who have left the
\nUnited States over the course of the past century. Together\, the interw
oven \nstories highlight African Americans’ complicated relationship to th
e United \nStates and the world at large.\n\n/Beyond the Shores/ is not ju
st about where African Americans stayed or where \nthey ate when they trav
eled but also about why they left in the first place \nand how they were t
reated once they reached their destinations. Drawing on \nyears of researc
h\, Dr. Tamara J. Walker chronicles their experiences in \natmospheric det
ail\, taking readers from well-known capital cities to more \nunusual dest
 inations like Yangiyul\, Uzbekistan\, and Kabondo\, Kenya. She \nfollows F
 lorence Mills\, the would-be Josephine Baker of her day\, in Paris\, \nand
Richard Wright\, the author turned actor and filmmaker\, in Buenos Aires.
\nShe relays tender stories of adventurous travelers\, including a group
of \ngifted Black crop scientists in the 1930s\, a housewife searching for
purpose \nin the 1950s\, a Peace Corps volunteer discovering his identity
in the 1970s\, \nand her own grandfather\, who\, after losing his eye fig
hting in World War II \nand returning to a country that showed no signs of
honoring his sacrifice\, \nset out with his wife and children on a circui
tous journey that sent them \nback and forth across the Atlantic. Tying th
ese tales together is Walker’s \npersonal account of her family’s\, and he
 r own\, experiences abroad—in \nFrance\, Brazil\, Argentina\, Austria\, an
d beyond.\n\nBy sharing the accounts of those who escaped the racism of th
e United States \nto try their hands at life abroad\, /Beyond the Shores/
shines a light on the \nmeaning of home and the search for a better life.
