DESCRIPTION:Food & Water Watch is working to reform our industrialized food
system. Most \nof the work is predicated on an analysis that the current
 food system – \nincluding production\, storage\, and distribution – is pro
foundly broken. It \nis largely controlled by a handful of large corporati
ons\, and results in \nunhealthy food that is produced in unsustainable\,
 inhumane\, and \nenvironmentally destructive ways. Michele Merkel\, Co-Di
rector of Food & \nWater Justice (FWJ)\, will discuss how FWJ brings trans
parency and \naccountability to the environmentally devastating practices
of factory \nfarming.\nMichele Merkel is co-director of the Food & Water J
ustice project\, which is \ndesigned to bring a new\, complementary legal
approaches to the already \nsuccessful community organizing\, outreach and
legislative work done by Food & \nWater Watch. Michele was formerly the
Chesapeake Regional Coordinator for \nWaterkeeper Alliance. At Waterkeeper
\, Michele helped to develop and implement \nthe campaigns of the eighteen
Waterkeeper programs that protect the \nChesapeake and Coastal Bays. Prio
r to joining the Alliance\, Michele was \nSenior Counsel and co-founder of
the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP). \nAt EIP\, she was responsible
for developing legal campaigns under the Clean \nAir Act and Clean Water
Act\, focusing mostly on industrial livestock \nproduction and municipal s
ewage issues. Michele previously served as an \nattorney for the United St
ates Environmental Protection Agency and worked for \na few years in the c
riminal defense section of a private law firm.
