DESCRIPTION:Alborz College and the Afterlife of Lafayette in Persia\nAs par
 t of Lafayette College’s Bicentennial Celebration\, this event \nrevisits
 a remarkable and little-known chapter in Lafayette’s history. From \nthe l
 ate 1890s until 1940\, Lafayette alumni\, faculty\, and students were \nde
eply involved in the founding\, funding\, and staffing of Alborz College i
n \nTehran through the long-running initiative known as “Lafayette in \nPe
rsia.” What began as an American missionary and educational project\, \nho
wever\, became something far larger: an Iranian institution of extraordina
ry \ninfluence whose history long outlived Lafayette’s direct involvement.
\n\n“Alborz: We Climb Mountains” tells the later story of the institution.
\nThrough the voices of graduates\, teachers\, and archival recordings of
  the \nAlborz College's legendary principal\, Dr. Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi\,
the film \ntraces the school’s place in the making of modern Iran and ref
lects on the \nupheavals that reshaped it\, especially those surrounding t
he 1979 Revolution \nand its aftermath. Rich with humor\, warmth\, and nos
talgia\, the documentary \noffers a moving portrait of a school that becam
e one of the most important \neducational institutions in Iran\, while als
o illuminating what was \ntransformed\, diminished\, or lost in the wake o
f the 1979 Revolution.\n\nMaryam Sepehri is an award-winning Iranian Ameri
can documentary filmmaker and \nthe director of “Alborz: We Climb Mountain
s.” Originally trained in \nmedicine\, she later turned to filmmaking\, pu
rsuing what she recognized as her \ntrue vocation. She holds a B.A. in fil
mmaking and an M.A. in photography\, and \nher documentary work explores m
emory\, learning\, exile\, and human expression. \nHer films include “Rain
Once Again” (2012)\, “Thicker than Paint” \n(2013)\, “Mouth Harp in Minor
Key: Hamid Naficy on/in Exile” (2017)\, and \n“Alborz: We Climb Mountains
 ” (2023).\n\nPersheng Vaziri is a scholar\, writer\, and filmmaker whose w
ork focuses on \ndocumentary film\, society\, and power\, especially in Ir
an. Her research \nexamines how documentary filmmakers represent history\,
negotiate political \nconstraint\, and grapple with the legacies of revol
ution\, state control\, and \nsocial change. Her current book project on I
ranian documentary filmmakers’ \ncreative processes and resistance to stat
e control is forthcoming from the \nUniversity of Texas Press in August 20
 26.
