Jay Schaffner was an active member of the Communist Party, USA for 23 years. He ran for the University of Illinois Board of Trustees as a Communist and received nearly 25,000 votes. For more than 45 years he has been a social activist in anti-war, civil rights, student, youth and trade union movements. He was President and General Manager of Anniversary Tours, a travel agency which specialized in people to people tourism; an elected member of the Executive Board of the New York musicians Union (Local 802 AFM); and is currently one of the moderators of Portside, a large left listserve and website.
He will discuss his experiences in the Communist Party and his life as an activist outside the Party, and offer reflections on recent political issues.
