Join us and build your own Japanese tea bowls (chawan) in this two-part workshopIn the morning session (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM), students will learn basic handbuilding techniques and shape their own chawans from clay. Guest ceramic artist Mark Tyson will also give a presentation on the variations of chawans and the process of woodfiring.

Students will return for the evening session (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM)to carve the foot of their bowls and refine their forms. During this session, Professor Chu Chu will introduce how chawans are used in the Japanese tea ceremony.

 

After the workshop, students’ bowls will be taken to be fired in either wood-fired or electric kilns and later returned to each student. Please note that the event does not provide lunch or dinner, but participants are welcome to bring their own food for each session.
