DESCRIPTION:*Please join us for the 2026 Max Kade Distinguished Lecture in 
 German \nStudies!*\n* *\nBetween 1776 and 1783\, Great Britain hired more 
 than thirty thousand German \nsoldiers to fight in its war against the Ame
 rican rebels. Collectively known \nas Hessians\, the soldiers and accompan
 ying civilians\, including hundreds of \nwomen and children\, spent extend
 ed periods in locations as dispersed and \nvaried as Canada in the north a
 nd West Florida in the south.* *Drawing on \nextensive research in private
  papers and official records authored by members \nof the German corps\, t
 his presentation explores the key experiences of these \nindividuals as th
 ey waged war on a distant continent against a people that \nhad done them 
 no harm. Special attention will be given to interactions \nbetween German 
 soldiers and German-Americans.\n* *\n*Dr. Friederike Baer* is an award-win
 ning author and Professor of History at \nPennsylvania State University Ab
 ington College. Originally from Germany\, she \nholds a Ph.D. in early Ame
 rican history from Brown University. Her research \nhas been supported by 
 organizations such as the American Philosophical \nSociety\, University of
  Michigan Clements Library\, German Academic Exchange \nService (DAAD)\, a
 nd the Society of the Cincinnati. Her publications include \nthe books /Th
 e Trial of Frederick Eberle/: /Language\, Patriotism and \nCitizenship in 
 Philadelphia’s German Community\, 1790-1830/\, which was \nawarded the St.
  Paul\, Biglerville Prize in American Lutheran \nHistory\, and /Hessians: 
 German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary \nWar\, /which was honored w
 ith the American Roundtable of Philadelphia Annual \nBook Award\, Inaugura
 l American Battlefield Trust Prize for History Honorable \nMention\, and S
 ociety of the Cincinnati Prize. Dr. Baer served as a historical \nadvisor 
 and interviewee for /The American Revolution\, /a documentary film \nby Ke
 n Burns\, Sarah Botstein\, and David Schmidt.\n
