Exploring Textures: Poetry & Nature Frottage Workshop

Explore the art of frottage (rubbings on textured surfaces) and the art of writing mini-poems in this creative workshop for all ages.

Lafayette studio lecturer, director of Community Arts and executive director of the Karl Stirner Arts Trail Artist Jim Toia and Lafayette Professor Emeritus Poet Lee Upton will lead a fun afternoon combining words and textures during a session poetry workshopping and introducint those words through frottage, a technique that became popular during the Dada and Surrealist movements of the early 20th century.

The technique involves placing paper over a form and using graphite to rub the surface of the paper to record the forms beneath. Upton will assist workshop participants with writing short poems and words, and Toia will supply some materials from his nature collection for textured exploration.

Please bring writing paper. Other materials will be supplied.

Children younger than 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult – please choose the tuition rate for both participants. Adults accompanying children get a discounted rate
