DESCRIPTION:Dr. Brian Zanger (Swarthmore College) will present his work tit
led 'Modeling \nIrregularities in Galaxy Rotation'. The talk is open to al
l Lafayette \naffiliates\, but will assume some background physics knowled
ge. Please join us \nfor refreshments starting at 4:15pm.\n\n \n\nAbstract
:\n\nModern integral field spectrographs can obtain hundreds of spectra ac
ross the \nentire faces of thousands of distant galaxies\, allowing us an
unprecedented \nlook into their inner workings. By using the Doppler shift
information from \nemission and absorption lines\, we can see a detailed
picture of how a \ngalaxy's gas and stars are moving. I use this type of s
patially-resolved \nspectral data from the SDSS-MaNGA survey to study irre
gularities in the \nrotational patterns of barred spiral galaxies\, develo
ping statistical models \nto accurately describe the distortions caused by
galactic bars. I have \nproduced models of over 1000 barred galaxies\, en
abling me to study the \neffects of bars on galactic structure\, stellar p
opulations\, and galaxy \nevolution. I will also discuss my work on kinema
tic weak lensing\, the \nmodeling of gravitational distortions in galaxy v
elocity fields created by \nthe dark matter halos of galaxy clusters. I am
continuing these projects with \nundergraduate researchers interested in
 astronomical data analysis.
