Please join us for a presentation by Dr. Lacquintano (English Department, Dean of Arts, Humanities and Interdisciplinary Programs) as part of the Hanson Center for Inclusive STEM Education semester of programming on "Can AI Generate IDEA's? Navigating the Promises and Perils of Artificial Intelligence for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access."
Presentation Abstratct: As academic researchers sort through Silicon Valley's AI hype and continue their inquiry into the evolution of large language models, millions of "everyday writers" have quietly adopted chatbots to facilitate their writing. The term everyday writers refers to a class of people who write for substantial portions of their day but do not tend to self-identify as "writers." This talk draws on an interview study of how these writers have been implementing LLMs into their work. It specifically attends to whether or not ordinary users of LLMs are aware of (and shift their usage in response to) the categories of AI harms emerging in the academic literature such as bias, environmental concerns, linguistic homogenization, and data privacy.
