Rethinking Democracy: Megatrends and Their Challenges in Germany and Beyond
Prof. Andrea Römmele, Hertie School of Governance, Berlin
Wednesday, October 16, 2:45–4:00 pm EST
109 Simon Center (Auditorium) or Zoom (register here)
Megatrends shape our societies: climate change, urbanization, digitalization, and migration, to name just a few. What are the challenges of these megatrends for today's democracies? How can democratic goverments tackle them? Andrea Römmele focuses on Germany to analyze how current political parties cope with these challenges. How do we explain the growing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), and are there parallels to the United States?
Andrea Römmele is Professor of Political Communication and Vice President at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. Her research interests include comparative political communication, political parties, and election campaigns. She was Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Modern German Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara and visiting fellow at the Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC and at the Australian National University in Canberra. Römmele is co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Political Consulting and Policy Advice and also works as a consultant to political and corporate campaigns.
Prof. Römmele will speak on Zoom and in English.
We look forward to welcoming you!
