DESCRIPTION:One of the puzzles of American politics today is why so many Ch
 ristians are \neager to vote for a man who seems to hold Christian values 
 so unbearably \nlightly. Isn’t it obvious that “real” Christians should no
 t vote for a \nfelon who takes his marching orders from conspiracy theoris
 ts rather than the \nBible and seems unable to find even one of the Ten Co
 mmandments to his \nliking? This talk tries to answer that question by div
 ing into “big \nhistory”—to the beginnings of the Agricultural Revolution 
 (around 10\,000 \nyears ago) when humans stopped hunting and gathering and
  began to settle down \nas farmers. It will then race through the origins 
 of the world’s religions \nin the first millennium BCE\, Christianity’s ma
 ny alliances with empires\, \nthe culture wars\, and the tangled history o
 f presidential piety from the \nJefferson-Adams election of 1800 to the Tr
 ump-Harris election of 2024.\n \n
