Rising authoritarianism over the past two decades have led to fears that we may be entering a period of illiberal democracy as democratic rights, minority protection, and the rule of law fall into retreat. And yet, while fears that democracy is eroding around the world seem well founded, there are nevertheless events that could point in a more hopeful direction, including suprising election results and social movements in countries around the world that seem to be pushing back on the authoritarian tide. This year's Class of 61 International Speakers Series speakers conduct research at the cutting edge of ethnic politics, democracy, authoritarianism, and the rule of law and are therefore well positioned to help us make sense of the state and potential future of democracy, rights, and the rule of law around the world. Come join us for two engaging presentations, followed by a student and faculty panel discussion, of the state of democracy on the eve of the 2024 US election.
