 r's lecture will open the traveling exhibition 'Thomas Mann: \nDemocracy W
 ill Win! [2]' that will be on display at the Williams Center for \nthe Art
 s [3] from August 28 until October 25th. \n\n*The Migrations of the Mann F
 amily*\n\nThomas Mann’s vision of democracy was shaped by his own history 
 of \nmigration\, but also by the many persecutions and migrations in his f
 amily.  \nHe grew up with the stories of his mother’s homeland\, Brazil.  
 And \neventually in his exile in California\, he came to call it his \n“mo
 therland.”  His brother\, his parents in-law\, and his children all \nfled
  Germany and built new lives in other countries. Mann’s personal \nexperie
 nce of racism and anti-Semitism that was directed at him and his \nfamily 
 fueled his anti-fascist activism.  And the people who worked for him\, \na
 lso brought their own experiences of migration with them to his house in 
 \nPacific Palisades.  This talk puts Thomas Mann’s political vision in \nc
 onversation with the people closest to him.  \n\nVeronika Fuechtner is Cha
 ir of Comparative Literature and Associate Professor \nof German Studies a
 t Dartmouth College. She also teaches in Jewish Studies\, \nand Women's\, 
 Gender and Sexuality Studies. She is the author of /Berlin \nPsychoanalyti
 c/ (University of California Press\, 2011) and the co-editor of \n/Imagini
 ng Germany\, Imagining Asia/ (with Mary Rhiel\, Camden House\, 2013) and 
 \n/A Global History of Sexual Science 1880-1960/ (with Douglas E. Haynes a
 nd \nRyan Jones\, University of California Press\, 2017). She is completin
 g a \nmonograph on Thomas and Heinrich Mann's Brazilian mother\, Julia Man
 n\, and the \nMann family construction of race and 'Germanness.' Her resea
 rch interests \ninclude the history of psychoanalysis and sexology\, the r
 elationship between \nscience and culture\, discourses on race and ethnici
 ty\, German-language \nmodernism\, contemporary culture\, German-language 
 film\, and global cultural \nand scientific histories. \n\nThe lecture wil
 l be followed by a reception in the lobby of Oechsle Hall. \n\nWe look for
