From Dramatic Publishing: “Loads of laughter and literature collide in this smart hit comedy about books and the people who love them. Ana is a Type A personality who lives in a letter-perfect world with an adoring husband, the perfect job and her greatest passion: Book Club. But when her cherished group becomes the focus of a documentary film, their intimate discussions about life and literature take a turn for the hilarious in front of the inescapable camera lens. Add a provocative new member along with some surprising new book titles, and these six friends are bound for pandemonium. Sprinkled with fun theatrical references to documentaries and novels galore from Moby Dick and Age of Innocence to Twilight and The Da Vinci Code, this buoyant comedy on contemporary culture will have everyone laughing … and reflecting. The Book Club Play is a delightful new play about life, love, literature and the side-splitting results when friends start reading between the lines.”
The Book Club Play is a modern comedy featuring 6 principal characters: 3 female and 3 male, with up to five additional small roles for actors who deliver single monologues. (The small roles have a VERY flexible time commitment and only require regular evening attendance during full runs, tech, and the run of the show.) While the characters identify specifically as male and female, actors should audition for the roles that best suit their gender identity. As this is a play, there is no singing.
Initial auditions will be self-recorded video submissions. You may use your phone or any recording device to film yourself with audio and video. For your initial audition, you may audition with a 1-minute comic monologue you already know, or you may select one of the monologues below for a character you are interested in playing. Monologues do not need to be memorized. (While you may indicate interest in more than one character, only one video may be submitted.) Be sure to identify yourself in your video. E-mail Theater Department Administrative Coordinator Cindy Notaroberto (notarobc@lafayette.edu) if you wish to get access to the script for the show (reading it prior to auditioning is recommended). Callbacks, if needed, will be held on Lafayette’s Arts Campus on the evening of Monday, Dec. 4th and a single rehearsal will be held this semester on Wednesday, Dec. 6th. Rehearsals will resume in the Spring semester. If you are abroad this semester and returning and wish to be considered for a role, you should submit a video audition and we will make arrangements for callbacks. If you are unavailable at either the audition or rehearsal time, submit your video and indicate your availability on the Google form.
VIDEOS ARE DUE BY Sunday, Dec. 3rd at 8:00 p.m.
Earlier submissions are welcome. Submit all videos, along with your audition information and conflicts, via the Google form linked here: https://forms.gle/vYvD6gPhwiHxQHLQ7
The Book Club Play will run from Feb. 29th (Leap Day) and run through Sunday, March 3rd in the Weiss Theater in Buck Hall at Lafayette. You must be available for all performances. You can be in/work on the Marquis Players’ musical Cabaret, as this show closes over a month before that show’s opening. All cast and crew positions are open, except for stage manager, and academic credit can be earned for roles onstage and off. The Book Club Play will rehearse a few evenings a week, and some weekdays, depending on availability, until closer to the show, and then will rehearse Sunday afternoons and Monday through Thursday evenings in February, with additional times added during the final weeks before the show. Night classes may be able to be accommodated.
