DESCRIPTION:Ongoing forest fires around the planet\, rapid melting of glaci
 ers and ice \nsheets\, loss of biodiversity\, and rising global temperatur
 es all illustrate \nthat our planet is changing rapidly. At the same time\
 , we seem to be \nentering an epoch of unprecedented technological change 
 through automation \nand artificial intelligence. These technologies are l
 ikely to change the way \nwe all perceive and respond to our rapidly chang
 ing planet. Where do these \nmajor megatrends meet? Which new opportunitie
 s and challenges do we face as \nAI and autonomous systems enter domains o
 f critical importance for \nsustainability? In this talk\, Victor Galaz wi
 ll explore why — and \nhow — technological change matters for the future o
 f our planet\, in both \nexpected and unexpected ways. \n\n/Victor Galaz i
 s an Associate Professor at the Stockholm Resilience Centre \n(Stockholm U
 niversity)\, and Program Director at the Beijer Institute of \nEcological 
 Economics (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences). His work\, focused \non new
  societal challenges created by technological change\, includes \ngovernan
 ce dimensions of geoengineering\, early warning systems of epidemic \noutb
 reaks\, uses of social media to detect ecological change\, algorithmic \nt
 rade in financial markets\, and environmental risks embedded in early \nap
 plications of artificial intelligence. He has also contributed to the \nde
 velopment of the Planetary Boundaries concept alongside scientists at \nSt
 ockholm University. Dr. Galaz is the author of the book “Global \nEnvironm
 ental Governance\, Technology\, and Politics: The Anthropocene Gap” \n(Edw
 ard Elgar\, 2014)\, and co-founder of The Biosphere Code - A Manifesto for
  \nAlgorithms for Sustainability (2015)./\n\nThis event is part of '/A Wor
