DESCRIPTION:For some time now\, commentators have remarked upon the various
\ncrises unfolding in higher education. But the events of 2020 exposed ne
w \ncracks in the foundation. Not only did the pandemic test university \n
leadership unlike ever before\, but the gathering force of the \n#BlackLiv
esMatter movement reached a crescendo in summer 2020. The murder of \nGeor
ge Floyd prompted students\, staff\, and faculty to join together in \npro
test against the pervasive and corrosive force of anti-Blackness within \n
historically white colleges and universities (HWCUs). In so doing\, they l
aid \nbare the unfinished business of the Civil Rights era on college camp
uses and \nthe limits of DEI reform efforts to date.\n\n \n\nIn this talk\
, Dr. Barton argues that the 1990s-era diversity framework has \ntaken hig
her education as far as it can. In order to address legacies of \nexclusio
n embedded within HWCUs\, we must instead embrace a social justice \nframe
work that renders visible structural oppression and the ongoing legacies
\nof racist exclusion. Dr. Barton offers attendees a sense of the fraught
\nhistory of higher education and identifies the common obstacles we share
. \nDrawing on abolitionist ideology\, Barton suggests new tools and frame
works \nthat can help higher ed leaders and faculty chart a new path forwa
 rd through \nthe raging culture wars.\n[1]\n\nRegistration Link [2]\n\n \n
