Come to The Sustainability House and make "Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeders!"
Early last semester we realized our house was going through toilet paper extremely fast! It started out as a joke, where we stacked empty rolls on the shelf in front of our toilet, but we quickly started to amass a large amount of cardboard waste. That’s when we came up with the idea to recycle/upcycle the cardboard into bird feeders, thus deriving a second use for cardboard that most likely will proabably never be recycled. Additionally, we hope to encourage biodiversity on campus through native bird food.
We would like to make this event part of Earth Month (as sponsored by the office of sustainability) in hopes of reaching a broader audience than just our neighbors or those who are typically interested in sustainability.
The event will either take place in the Sustainability House backyard or (in the case of bad weather) our living room. Stop by around 6pm and we'll have snacks!
We have collected upwards of 50 toilet paper rolls. We will purchase several bags of bird seed, jars of peanut butter, and hemp twine. We will encourage students to return to their feeders to see their impacts, as well as recycle their final cardboard product. Can't wait to see you there!
