Professor Christina Sharpe's 2016 book In the Wake (Duke UP) has become one of the touchstone works in Black Studies today, influencing theorists, critics, artists, and scholars in a wide range of disciplines. For her Conarroe Lecture, she will draw on material from her forthcoming book Ordinary Notes (FSG, 2023), which meditates on and illuminates the many ordinary and extraordinary valences of Black being in a series of 248 notes. In grappling with some of the most enduring and challenging issues our society faces today, and "using beauty as a method" to do so, Sharpe has invented a new genre for thinking about what the past, present, and future of race might mean for us.
