On Monday, February 6th, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Turkey and Syria borders in the in the Gaziantep province of southeast Turkey. This earthquake is one of the strongest to hit the region in 100 years. Ten cities have sustained considerable damage, with over 30,00 buildings collapsed, including hospitals, schools, and government buildings. After 12 years of conflict in Syria, the effects of the earthquake are being compounded by the existing destruction, fuel shortages and a collapsed economy. Furthermore, sanctions in Syria make it difficult for aid to be received. ISA will be organising a fundraiser to collect donations for relief efforts in northwest Syria. We will be tabling in Farinon Atrium from 11am - 1pm and 5 - 7pm. The fundraiser will include samples of sahlab, a traditional sweet milk drink. All proceeds will be donated to The Syrian Arab Red Crescent, a humanitarian nonprofit organization headquartered in Damascus (for more info see ifrc.org).
