DESCRIPTION:*Talk Description:*\nJoin us as Berrisford discusses Black Art\
 , Expression\, and Identity arising \nfrom his recently published\, co-edi
 ted book\, ‘Shifting Time.’ \n\nWe will explore trends of how Black art/ar
 tists have engaged in Black visual \nexpression in general and specificall
 y during the COVID lockdown. \n\nIn the struggle for African American self
 -determinacy\, cultural theorists and \nartists tended to align Black art 
 with the politics of Black Power. But what \nconstitutes “legitimate” Blac
 k art and Black visual expression has been \nan ongoing\, open debate.\n\n
 Black art\, in the view of Black Power supporters\, cares less for the 'ar
 t for \nart's sake theory' in favor of Black culture’s need for art that a
 dvancing \nsociopolitical influence in the ongoing defining of African Ame
 rican \nidentity. As such\, Black art has a duty to the upliftment and dis
 tinction of \nthe Black community. \n\nBoothe\, a one-time figurative soci
 o-political painter\, has situated himself \nin the visual domain of abstr
 action. He will use this presentation/discussion \nto investigate and prom
 ote many forms of contemporary Black visual expression \nseen in ‘Shifting
  Time’ as necessary facets of cultural and \nsocio-political Black Identit

 peaker Bio:*\nBerrisford Boothe is a Lafayette grad\, ’83 and a Walters Tr
 avelling Award \nrecipient M.F.A. graduate of the Mount Royal School of Ar
 t\, M.I.C.A. A \nformer Professor of Art and Africana Studies at Lehigh Un
 iversity\, he was \nalso Interim Chair of the Department of Art Architectu
 re and Design\, and one \nof three professors responsible for conceiving\,
  building\, and implementing \nLehigh’s award-winning I.P.D. (Integrated P
 roduct Design) program and its \noffshoot graduate Technical Entrepreneur 
 (T.E.) program. He is a visual \nartist with a 30+-year practicing artist 
 and has produced 17 Solo \nexhibitions and participated in over 70 career 
 group shows across the U.S. \nHe has also exhibited his artwork in\nthe U.
 K.\, South America\, and Japan. His art has been placed in numerous \npubl
 ic collections including Lafayette College’s Permanent Collection\, The \n
 Philadelphia Convention Center Collection\, The Fitzwilliam Museum \nColle
 ction\, Universidad de Costa Rica\, The Kasser Foundation Collection\, \nT
 he Allentown Art Museum and The cUrniversity City Science Center\, among 
 \nothers. Boothe’s works are\nalso housed in significant Private Collectio
 ns.\n\nRecently\, Boothe has taken on writing about Contemporary African A
 merican \nArtists and exhibitions.Most recently he has penned essays for C
 t./NYC \npainter Mequitta Ahuja and Atlanta photographer/artist\, Tokie Ro
 me-Taylor. \nHe has written extensive essays for 2022 Venice Biennale arti
 st\, Arvie Smith \nincluding one for his book\, ‘2 Up And 2 Back.’ He has 
 also been \ncontracted to contribute summary text for Christie’s Auction H
 ouse on the \nartwork of international artist\, Amaoko Boafo for their Hon
 g Kong Auction \ncatalog. Boothe was the featured Interviewer North Caroli
 na artist\, Juan \nLogan in the Summer 2022 Issue of BOMB Magazine. An art
  Collector and \nCurator\, from 2012 – 2020\, he was the Founding and Prin
 cipal Curator for \nThe Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African A
 merican Art\, acquiring \nover 430 works of African American art in eight 
 years. During his tenure\, he \ncurated nine museum exhibitions including 
 the Portland Art Museum’s major \n2017 exhibition\, ‘Constructing Identity
 \,’ ‘Essential Presence’ at \nthe Allentown Art Museum\, ‘As We See It’ at
  the African American Museum \nin Philadelphia\, and assisted in producing
  and contributing to the \nexhibition catalog for the seminal 2019-20 Wads
 worth Atheneum exhibition\, \n‘Afrocosmologies: American Visions’ in Hartf
 ord\, Ct. Boothe co-conceived \nof\, and is the Co-Editor with Klare Scarb
 orough of the newly published book\, \n‘Shifting Time: African American Ar
 tists 2021-2022.\n\nHe resides in Easton\, PA where he continues his studi
