 or Jia \nTolentino to campus as the 2023 Hatfield Lecturer on February 22\
 , 2023. \n\nJia Tolentino is a staff writer at the New Yorker [1] and the 
 author of the \nessay collection /Trick Mirror [2]. /Formerly\, she was th
 e deputy editor \nat Jezebel [3] and a contributing editor at the Hairpin 
 [4]. She grew up in \nTexas\, received her undergraduate degree at the Uni
 versity of Virginia\, and \ngot her MFA in fiction from the University of 
 Michigan. In 2020\, \nshe received a Whiting Award [5] as well as the Jean
 nette Haien Ballard \nPrize. Her work has also appeared in the /New York T
 imes Magazine/ \n[6] and Pitchfork [7]\, among other places. /Trick Mirror
 /\, published in \n2019\, was an instant New York Times bestseller and a f
 inalist for the \nNational Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize for Be
 st First Book and \nthe PEN America Diamondstein-Spielvogel Award for the 
 Art of the Essay. It \nwas named one of the best books of the year by the 
 New York Public Library\, \nthe /New York Times Book Review/\, the /Washin
 gton Post/\, NPR\, the /Chicago \nTribune\,/ GQ\, and the Paris Review. Th
 e book has been translated into eleven \nlanguages and is out in paperback
  now.\n\nIn her lecture\, 'Against Optimization\,' Tolentino will question
  and undermine \nthe dominant ideas of worth\, growth and meaning.\n\nThe
