“Raucous and exquisitely poised” (The New York Times), “uncompromising and slyly humorous” (Gramophone), David Sanford’s music is a boundary-bursting fusion that takes the third stream ideas of Ellington, Kenton, and Schuller to a whole new plane. With a penchant for the primacy of brass and abundant room for improvisation, Sanford returns to the experimental roots of jazz in richly layered charts. The Big Band comprises 20 virtuosi in jazz, avant-garde, classical, funk, and Latin music who triumph in Sanford’s originals and delve into large ensemble literature that draws on popular music, classical, and jazz standards.
