The persistent underrepresentation of women, people of color, and other groups has long plagued STEM fields. In this talk, Professors Jenn Rossmann (ME) and Mary Armstrong (WGSS) discuss their award-winning research on how critical skills learned in WGSS (Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies) courses might help foster a “sense of belonging” among unrepresented STEM students. Can WGSS courses really empower underrepresented STEM students to better navigate the normatively white/masculine cultures of STEM? And what does that mean for STEM education and diversity?
