How can we use visual media, sometimes assumed to be value-neutral in the classroom? Film, especially documentary cinema is often misunderstood to be transparent and objective; and common-sense notions such as “the camera doesn’t lie” can be a misleading assumption for students and educators. In this workshop led by CITLS Faculty Fellow Professor Nandini Sikand we will talk about fraught use of violent images, aspects of cinematic language, learn about (mis)reading a film and/or an image, come up with some to thoughtful ways to incorporate media in the classroom.
