While many efforts over the last 20 years have been devoted to the transition to open access, less attention has been paid to the principles of equity and inclusion in scholarly communications. Yet there are significant inequalities in the system that threaten to be exacerbated as open access becomes widely adopted. This talk will touch on the underlying factors that are contributing to current inequalities in scholarly communications, and make the case for fostering greater bibliodiversity as a way of addressing these issues.

Kathleen Shearer is the Executive Director of COAR (Confederation of Open Access Repositories). She is also a research associate with the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and a strategic consultant in the area of open access, repositories and research data management.
