As computer mapping has become increasingly user-friendly, a movement to put map making in the hands of individuals and civic groups has emerged as a counterforce to “expert" cartographers working for the powerful. In this spirit, our workshop will introduce participants to online tools for finding and working with historical maps and other documents illustrating the history of our area.  We will offer presentations and instructional sessions focused on mapping the past in order to understand the social evolution of our region.

The workshop will take place in two half-day sessions on Zoom; Friday April 2nd and  Saturday April 3rd. Activities will include presentations by important scholars in the field, instruction in digital tools and resources, and a chance to network with others in our region who have an interest in historical geography and the use of historical maps. This workshop is designed both to introduce ongoing projects, and to serve as a catalyst for new ones. For more information about workshop instruction and presentations, please visit our webpage.

Attendees will be paid a $250 stipend for participating. There is limited space available for this workshop and the deadline to register is March 19, 2021. To register, please fill out this form.
