Jazz is one of America's greatest contributions to the arts. Jazz is also a handy window into American history. But no one becomes a jazz fan for those reasons. People become entranced with the music because of its rhythms and improvisatory nature. Jazz swings. When it doesn't swing, it is the exception rather than the rule. Jazz is fun. That does not mean that it's only fun, or simply fun. To paraphrase one of Charlie Parker's classic blues, now is definitely the time to jump in and get your feet wet in the swirling world of music that is jazz. Join Loren Schoenberg, Founding Director and Senior Scholar of The Jazz Museum in Harlem, as he brings the audience on a walk through the history of jazz and its roots as an African American-derived music form. This virtual event is brought to you by the NYC Alumni Chapter of the Lafayette Alumni Association.
