Othello (1603), by William Shakespeare

Recorded 2013 at London’s National Theatre before a live audience.

The persistent themes of racism, military and social hierarchy, jealousy, love, friendship, and betrayal, are as relevant today as they were when Shakespeare penned this tragedy in 1603. The Moorish general Othello, newly married to Desdemona – half his age – is appointed leader of a major military operation, while his underofficer, Iago, is passed over for promotion in favor of the young Cassio. Envious, embittered, and bent on retaliation, Iago persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair.

This acclaimed production of William Shakespeare’s play about the destructive power of jealousy was nominated for Best Revival at the 2013 Olivier Awards. Adrian Lester (Othello) and Rory Kinnear (Iago) jointly won the Evening Standard Best Actor Award for their performances in Shakespeare’s indelible roles. Directed by Nicholas Hytner (Miss Saigon, One Man, Two Guvnors).
