“Translations” (1980) by Brian Friel,

Recorded July 31, 2018 at London’s National Theatre before a live audience.

What happens when a land is robbed of its language? Friel’s modern classic is a powerful account of nationhood, which sees the turbulent relationship between England and Ireland play out in one quiet community. It’s August 1833, and Owen, the prodigal son, returns to rural Donegal from Dublin to the Irish-speaking town of Baile Bag. With him are two British army officers, Royal cartographers, who are assigned to create a map of the area, replacing the Gaelic names with English. It is an administrative act with radical personal and cultural consequences.
