Directed by Professor Mary Jo Lodge

Emma! A Pop Musical is an updated version of Jane Austen’s famous novel about Emma, a young would-be matchmaker who is blind to what is happening in her own heart. The action is set in a modern boarding school (Clueless does something similar, but this is NOT a musical version of Clueless). All of the songs are covers of famous pop songs. We are performing the “Safe at Home” version, which includes adaptations made by the author for actors performing via Zoom. Note that the show includes both singing and non-singing roles for men and women. Non-binary actors can self-select as to which role(s) they wish to be seen for. There are 5 singing roles for women (all are mezzo/belters, with some requiring higher belts than others) and 3 smaller non-singing ones, and 2 singing roles for men (one baritone and one tenor) and 2 featured non-singing roles for men. Links to YouTube audition tracks for the women and tracks for the male audition songs, as well as PDFs of audition materials for non-singers (read only the highlighted portions), can be found here:

Record a video of yourself singing along to one of the tracks and/or reading the text. Song lyrics can be found via a web search. Videos should not exceed one minute, so choose a portion of the song to sing. Be sure to identify yourself in your video. You may sing OR read in your initial audition, but you may not do both. Those interested in playing Jeff (baritone) should sing, “Things I’ll Never Say” (Avril Lavigne). Those interested in playing Frankie (tenor) should sing, “Heartbreaker” (Pat Benetar). Men may choose to sing with the vocal line track (or not). Those interested in playing Emma should sing “Roar” (Katy Perry) and those interested in playing Harriet should sing “Brave” (Sara Barrielles).

VIDEOS ARE DUE BY SEPT. 1st AT 5:00p.m.  Submit all videos, along with your audition information and conflicts, via the Google form linked here:

Emma!: A Pop Musical will run October 22nd- 24th on Zoom. You must be available for all performances. In order to avoid conflicts, we will rehearse mostly in the daytime until the earlier theater productions of Much Ado and Everyman end in early October. Those in acting-only roles will not be regularly needed until early October. All cast and crew positions are open, except for stage manager, and academic credit can be earned for major roles onstage and off.
