Ruha Benjamin is an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies and the founder of the IDA B. WELLS Just Data Lab at Princeton University. She studies the social dimensions of science, technology, and medicine, race and citizenship, knowledge and power. Her recent book Race After Technology examines the relationship between machine bias and systemic racism, analyzing specific cases of “discriminatory design” and offering tools for a socially-conscious approach to technology development. Her expertise on the abuses of facial recognition and other machine learning technologies is incredibly, painfully timely and widely relevant.
